Closet & Painted Floors

Yesterday I removed the carpet out of our master bedroom closet. It was not fun and kind of gross. So now I'm wondering what is living under all of the carpet in this house?

I grew up with a father, still to this day who hates floor to floor carpet. When we lived in a house that had no hardwood floor and wall to wall carpet he ripped all of it out. We lived with sub flooring until we moved to another house.
{ I vacuumed while pulling the carpet out, ewww }

Now I know why he never like carpet.

Bugs, dirt, dust mites, mold, and just plane yuckyness.

Because we can't afford to replace the floors, and my guy says no way to living with sub flooring, I'm going to have to deal. I'll keep reminding him about the bugs and the dust causing our sneezing.

I still have to pull out the carpet tack strips around the edge, and some of the little pieces of padding, vacuum again, and pick out some hardwood flooring.
I would like to buy cheap unfinished flooring so I can paint the floor.

A nice high-gloss blue like this would be nice, it just has to match my bathroom.

Simple gray and white stripes would make a nice statement

This is nice also, this light pink would work great to match our bathroom.

Blue again

loving this floor, except I like to see the boards.

neutral stripes would be nice

Or a fun bold pattern like this would make our small closet more interesting

I also love the idea of a high-gloss white, and maybe painting the whole bathroom floor to match.

As of now my bathroom is a mess, all my clothes are in a pile, I have a pile for donation, other items that dont need to be in a closet and trash.

This is before I started taking stuff out

I still have a lot more to do, there is shelving up top that needs organizing, there is also shelving along the right side and i need to go through that.

This is the only lighting we have in the closet, I bought the schoolhouse globe over the weekend to replace it.
See all the stuff up top? I'm not a hoarder I swear, this room is just been neglected, mainly because it got so bad over the summer, we've had lots of rain and humility and because one of the closet wall in a exterior wall it can become mildewy.

I finally talked my guy into putting a window in the closet, it really needs it.

What are you working on?

Updated Mirror

A long time ago I picked this mirror up at a thrift store for under $8 and I knew I'd want to paint it.

 {before}

I loved the shape and the design and always looking for a round mirror.

It took me a few good spray paint coats but it finally got finished.

I used a green/gray spray paint color I picked up on clearance at the depot.

This was a simple makeover project and now I just need to find a good place for it.

Side table transformation

I know I said I was going to post last night but I was sidetracked by designing my business cards and next thing I knew its 10pm.

With sanding and painting and sanding and polishing I made over this side table in two days. I like the simple look and a ruggedness to it.  When I saw it I knew it would work next to the sectional in our living room. When I rearranged our living room I moved the sectional in the middle and separated the chaise lounge to the corner so there's no arm on the side and we needed a place for drinks and what not.

Here is what it looked like before

It was polyurethane and they used a green stain

and here it is finished

ahhh much better

I really enjoyed transforming this table, after sanding it I applied a thick coat of this blue opps paint from BM and when it dried I sanded it down again. Then I dry brushed the white oops paint , the same paint as I used here for the cabinet
Then I hand sanded it with a 300 grit sandpaper and rubbed a glaze all over it with a cloth and when that dried I applied Minwax Paste wax.

here are some up close shots so you can see the detail

I like the dry brushing affect and this piece is a new favorite of mine now.

a great place to stack books and hold my coffee.

Here it is against my couch

please dont pay any attention to my ugly carpet....I'm trying to talk my man into ripping the carpet out and maybe painting the subfloor until we get new flooring....hes not responding to well to my ideas

I get the West Elm catalog in the mail and saw this modern side table/bookcase
I'd really like to recreate something like this using the side table, it would be different but we need something to go behind the couch and I just love this idea. We would probably have to shorten the table because it is high.  But I'm very happy with the my new side table!

Have a lovely day!

Lamp renovation

I was so bored of seeing this lamp everyday sitting on the secretory desk...its just so not my style. I could have gone out to look for a new one but that wouldn't be any fun but a renovation of the lamp would be.

I had recently picked up this Ralph Lauren metallic paint on clearance for $3 and I thought I'd try it out and mix my own color and test it to see how it would look on the lamp.
By the way Home Depot isn't selling the Ralph Lauren paints anymore but you might one to check to see if they have any left on clearance, I got the glazing paint also for $3.

Here is the lamp before

Now the base of the lamp has a crack texture to it so I thought what could I do to make it smooth, I tried sanding it but it didn't help so I grab my wood filler

and rubbed it all over and  once dried I sanded it.
It didn't completely make it smooth but I wasn't going for the perfect look.

Here it is now

now for my favorite part
the shade

With some leftover fabric from the pillow I made for the living room I covered the shade with fabri-tac glue. Then I glued the trim on. I decided to space the trim and not have it directly on the edge.

I love the colors in this fabric.

The trim looks black in the photos but its navy.

Now I can walk by the lamp and enjoy it more.

So one more time
before
after

So all I need now is 2 drum shades for my hall table lamps and I already have fabric to cover them and hopefully I get those soon.

...................................................................................................................
note my side table is done and I'm waiting for the sun to shine through my living room for pictures!
